SPECIAL ENVOY TO WASHINGTON

FROM WASHINGTON

President Dilma Rousseff announced that Brazil's goal is to bring illegal deforestation down to zero until 2030, with restoration and reforestation of 12 million hectares within that period.

In a meeting with President Barack Obama at the White House on Tuesday (30), the two leaders pledged to achieve individually 20% share of renewable, non-hydropower energy sources in their respective power arrays until 2030.

Three days before, Rousseff decided it would be necessary to introduce a more ambitious target on climate change in order to have a positive agenda on the trip, a counterpoint to the domestic political crisis.

Climate change was Obama's priority. The American President wants to make the subject one of the legacies of his presidency and tries to influence China, India and Brazil to get a satisfactory outcome at the climate conference in Paris.

The announcement, however, is below the desired by the White House, which expected targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

"I thank our Brazilian partners for anticipating some of their goals to reduce emissions, including substantial plans to eliminate illegal deforestation," said Obama, in a visit that marked the rapprochement between the countries after two years of strained relations after coming to light that the American intelligence had spied Rousseff.

Obama sealed the rapprochement stating that Brazil is an "essential partner" and a "global, not just regional leadership".

Rousseff's visit to Washington was scheduled to October 2013, but it was cancelled after the espionage scandal.

Asked by the American press about the theme, she repeatedly said she had overcome the episode. "President Obama assured me that when he needs information on Brazil, he would call me."
