ANNA VIRGINIA BALLOUSSIER
FROM NEW YORK
At one of Hillary Clinton's offices in New York, there is a sense of gratitude for the Republican Donald Trump. "He makes our job a lot easier," said Amanda, 25, a volunteer for the Democratic campaign.
A day earlier, the Washington Post published a video which showed the businessman bragging about grabbing women"by the pussy," without consent. For the team behind the former First Lady's campaign to become the first female president in the White House, Trump is a dream opponent.
This time it is the "unpopular but necessary" candidate, says Amanda, that I am supporting for one evening at one of the campaign offices in Manhattan, three weeks after having done the same for Trump.
The Democratic team does not require contracts (at Trump's campaign headquarters, I had to sign an agreement stating that I would not "humiliate or belittle" the candidate, his family or his businesses).
The task of the day involved calling the democratic base in Iowa that would be voting by absentee ballot, generally by mail. Many are older and suffer from mobility issues.
My first contact, Pearl, 99, is also my first contact with no interest in the election: "I am too old for these kids [Hillary e Trump] they'll say anything."
More receptive, Juanita, 92, says she is excited to vote for a woman for the first time. I ask if she is Hispanic, and the daughter of Germans explains that her parents named her after an old Spanish dance club.
While she sings on the line, a Latino in a wheelchair, working alongside me and another 70 year old woman, points at a poster on the wall. the poster "my best call was," tracks cuts between volunteers and voters, transcribed in red ink.
One of them dialed a Mr. Good Karma. Another noted that Iris, from New Hampshire, told us what to do with the vote ("stick it where the sun don't shine").
