FROM BRASÍLIA

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has revealed that it is searching for a group of Brazilians who tried to enter the United States illegally by boat.

According to Itamaraty, on November 6th, the relatives of 19 people contacted the Brazilian embassy in Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, to report the disappearance of a group that tried to enter the United States illegally, traveling by boat from the Bahamas.

The disappearance was revealed on Friday (23) on the "Brazilian News Agency" page, a website dedicated to the Brazilian community of Framingham, Massachusetts.

According to Itamaraty, all of the information that the Brazilian authorities have obtained up to now was provided by the relatives of the disappeared and, therefore, the ministry cannot confirm that 19 people are indeed missing or if the boat even left, or if the group is currently lost in the sea or on land, or if it was jailed in the United States.

Ministry members report that the relatives told that the group would attempt to make the journey by boat from the Bahamas to Miami, but there is no way to know if they actually followed that path, since there are various routes available to reach US territory.

"Brazilian News Agency" claims to know the identity of all of the Brazilians on board the potentially shipwrecked boat and divulged some of the names with the families' consent.

Among the names are Marcio Pinheiro de Souza and Renato Soares de Araújo, both from Sardoá (MG), a city near Governador Valadares, in the eastern part of the state; Arlindo de Jesus Santos, from Rondon do Pará (PA); and Bruno Oliveira Souza, Reginaldo Ferreira Martins and Diego from Rondônia.
