Armed Forces Say '64 Coup Was 'Historic Milestone' in Brazilian Politics

Order of the day alluding to March 31 is signed by commanders and Braga Netto, who will be Bolsonaro's deputy

On the same day that President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) once again threatened the Judiciary regarding the result of the 2022 elections, the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces released a note this Wednesday (30) calling the 1964 coup a "landmark history of Brazilian political evolution." The agenda alluding to March 31, the last of Bolsonaro's term, is signed by the commanders of the three Forces and by the Minister of Defense, Walter Braga Netto, who will step down from the ministry Thursday (31) to be the vice president on the presidential ticket for re-election.

"The March 31, 1964 Movement is a historic landmark in Brazilian political evolution, as it reflected the yearnings and aspirations of the population at the time," says a text released by the Defense. The term "movement" to refer to the coup had already emerged in previous years. The note also says that "history cannot be rewritten, in a mere act of revisionism, without proper contextualization." The Defense says that the years following 1964 were of "stability, security, economic growth and political maturation," which led to peace in the country.
