The indigenous activist Bruno Pereira, 41, murdered in Vale do Javari, accumulated years of work with indigenous peoples and was a target of threats due to his work in the Amazon region.

He, who leaves behind three children (two toddlers aged 2 and 3 and a teenager aged 16), had been missing since June 5th along with British journalist Dom Phillips, 57.

Bruno was pointed out by colleagues as a person who always wanted to provide conditions for indigenous people to take care of the land they live on whichever way they wanted.

A civil servant at Funai (National Indian Foundation) since 2010, Bruno took leave after being exonerated from the General Coordination of 'Isolated and Recently Contacted Indians'.

He had extensive experience in the Vale do Javari indigenous land and was dismissed from the position in October 2019. He then decided to work with the NGO Univaja ( Union of the indigenous people of Vale do Javari).

In a letter released after he left Funai, indigenous activists stated that this was a historic setback regarding the public policy to protect indigenous peoples.
