Fisherman Confesses to the Murders of Journalist and Indigenist, Says the Federal Police
According to the police, Amarildo de Oliveira pointed out where he had buried the bodies of Bruno Pereira and Dom Phillips
The Federal Police stated, this Wednesday (15), that fisherman Amarildo Oliveira, one of the suspects in the disappearance of indigenist Bruno Pereira and British journalist Dom Phillips, had confessed to participating in their murder.
According to the police, he pointed out where he had buried the bodies, as well as the concealment of the speedboat in which Bruno and Dom were. The agency is awaiting forensic reports to confirm if the human remains found belong to the two of them.
The other known suspect, Oseney de Oliveira, Amarildo's brother, remained in Atalaia do Norte (AM) for a custody hearing. The investigation does not rule out the involvement of other people in the crime.
Known for their work in defending the forest, Bruno and Dom disappeared on Sunday, June 5th, while returning by boat to Atalaia do Norte, the closest municipality to the Indigenous Land Vale do Javari.
A licensed civil servant employed at Funai, Bruno had been receiving threats, especially by fishermen working illegally in the reserve. The case raised international pressure on the Bolsonaro government's environmental policy.
In a statement that sparked criticism, the President said that Dom "was frowned upon in the region" because he reported against miners and that he should have paid more attention "to himself."
