Bolsonaro Tells Biden that He Will Exit the Presidency in A Democratic Way
Meeting at the Summit of the Americas is the first between the American and the Brazilian
In a bilateral meeting at the Summit of the Americas, President Jair Bolsonaro met with Joe Biden for the first time since the Democrat succeeded Donald Trump, an ally of the Brazilian, in the White House.
Bolsonaro told the American leader that when he exits the government, he will do so in a democratic way.
"I arrived through democracy and I am sure that when I leave the government, it will also be in a democratic way," said the Brazilian at the beginning of the meeting in Los Angeles, which continued behind closed doors.
In the 18 months since Biden's inauguration, the relationship between the two leaders has been distant.
Biden praised what he called a "vibrant democracy with robust electoral institutions" in Brazil and said the country has done a good job protecting the Amazon.
Elections and the environment were topics that Bolsonaro preferred to see out of the conversation after hesitating to accept the invitation to the event.
In front of the democrat, he admitted that "at times we distanced ourselves for ideological reasons" but highlighted the affinities between the two countries and asked for a deepening of relations.
