Alvaro Vargas Llosa, Peruvian writer and essayist, is senior researcher and director of the Center for Global Prosperity, in Washington. Born in Peru, he graduated in international history at the London School of Economics. He has been a member of the board of directors of the Miami Herald Publishing Company, director of the op-ed page and columnist of the "Miami Herald" and contributor to the "Wall Street Journal", "Los Angeles Times", BBC World Service and "Time" magazine.
With Carlos Alberto Montaner and Plinio Apuleyo Mendoza, Mr. Vargas Llosa co-authored "Manual del Perfecto Idiota Latinoamericano" (Guidebook for the perfect Latin-American Idiot). He was the press spokesman for the Democratic Front during the 1990 presidential election in Peru and international relations advisor of Perú Posible during the presidential campaign in 2001. He has received the award for best radio program on current issues in Florida (1998), the Defense of Freedom award given by the Parliament of Puerto Rico (1997), the Defense of Freedom award given by the Peruvian Association of Independent Fishermen (2000) and the Freedom of Speech award of the Association of Iberian-American Journalists (2003).
