Germán Rey was the ombudsman for the Bogotá (Colombia) daily "El Tiempo" from 2000 to 2002. Mr. Rey directed the first meeting of ombudsmen organized by Fundación Nuevo Periodismo Iberoamericano, in Guadalajara, Mexico. He is at present working as adviser for Social Responsibility projects at the Casa Editorial El Tiempo. He is a professor and counselor for the Fundación Nuevo Periodismo Iberoamericano, created by Gabriel García Márquez, and a member of the Directing Council of the Cemex-FNPI Journalism Award.
Mr. Rey is also a member of the board of directors of the Freedom of the Press Foundation and took part in the creation of the Media for Peace project. He is a Communications professor at the Universidad Javeriana, in Bogotá, and at the Center of Journalism Studies of the Universidad de Los Andes. His most recent works include studies on the coverage of armed conflicts by Colombian newspapers and television stations, on the lack of safety of the citizens, published in 14 Latin-American dailies, and "Ofício de Equilibristas", a book which includes 21 journalistic case studies from the time during which he was the readers’ defender at "El Tiempo". His next book is to be entitled "Diário" and will be an ethnographic description of his experience as ombudsman.
