Jaime Abello Banfi has been, since its creation in 1995, the executive director of the Fundación Nuevo Periodismo Iberoamericano, an international center devoted to the training and professional development of journalists and established in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, by the initiative of the writer and journalist Gabriel García-Márquez.
Mr. Banfi graduated from the School of Law of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, in Bogotá, but has devoted most of his career to film and television. From 1990 to 1995, before being connected to the Fundación, he headed Telecaribe, the Regional Television Channel of the Caribbean, based in the city of Barranquilla. He is the chairman of the Antonio Nariño Project, an alliance of organizations committed to furthering and defending freedom of speech and the right to information in Colombia. He is also a member of the international organizing committee of the Global Forum for Media Development and of the International Advisory Committee of the Press and Society Institute of Peru. Mr. Banfi is one of the founding members of the Colombian Freedom of the Press Foundation.
