O musical "The Band's Visit", que retrata uma noite em uma pequena cidade de Israel, e a montagem "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child", com o personagem bruxo já adulto, foram os grandes vencedores da 72ª edição do prêmio Tony, o Oscar do teatro de Nova York. As obras levaram dez e seis troféus, respectivamente.
Com músicas de David Yazbek e texto de Itamar Moses, "The Band’s Visit” retrata a passagem de um modesto grupo de músicos egípcios por uma pequena vila israelense. Recebeu elogios rasgados da crítica especializada. O ator Tony Shalhoub (conhecido pela série "Monk") e a atriz Katrina Lenk, que vivem um par romântico, venceram em suas categorias. O musical venceu em 10 das 11 categorias a que foi indicado.
No segmento de produções não musicais, o domínio foi do universo de J.K. Rowling. A peça de Jack Thorne mostra Harry Potter 19 anos após o fim do sétimo livro da série. Levou o prêmio de melhor peça e mais outros cinco troféus (cenografia, figurino, iluminação, som e direção).
O musical inspirado no desenho animado “Bob Esponja Calça Quadrada” e outra adaptação das telas ao palco, do filme “Meninas Malvadas”, lideravam as indicações, com 12 cada. Levaram, respectivamente, uma estatueta (melhor cenografia de musical) e nenhuma.
Os dois espetáculos eram seguidos, em número de indicações, por “Angels in America”, remontagem da peça de Tony Kushner que fez história nos anos 1990, sobre Aids e a ascensão do conservadorismo nos Estados Unidos. O remake venceu em 3 das 11 das categorias que disputou: melhor ator (Andrew Garfield), melhor ator coadjuvante (Nathan Lane) e melhor remontagem.
