New Lava Jato Rapporteur Will Prioritize Urgent Cases of Arrested Defendants
02/03/2017 - 14h26
After a draw, Justice Edson Fachin was chosen to be the new rapporteur of the Lava Jato operation in Brazil's Supreme Court (STF) and promised "a quick pace" to carry on with proceedings.
Fachin is likely to prioritize pressing requests related to defendants already arrested, such as a complaint in legal confidentiality made by the defense of former congressman Eduardo Cunha (Brazilian Democratic Movement Party).
Fachin is also likely to prioritize pressing petitions of the country's Attorney General's Office by moving them up on the schedule.
It is expected that the Attorney General's Office will soon make a series of requests deriving from the plea bargains of 77 executives of construction company Odebrecht confirmed by the Brazil's Chief Justice, Carmen Lucia. Fachin will be in charge of authorizing them or not.
Judge Fachin takes over the duties of Teori Zavaski, killed on January 19 in a plane crash. Fachin will continue some 40 investigations in the Lava Jato operation and at least ten accusations made by prosecutors which have not been analyzed yet.
Appointed to the Supreme Court in 2015, he is considered quick in his decisions.
