Workers' Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores- PT) filed on Wednesday (15) former president Luis Inácio Lula da Silva as the party's candidate for the upcoming presidential elections. Former São Paulo mayor Fernando Haddad will be in the ticket as candidate for vice president.

Later in the same day, a draw elected Luis Barroso as the Higher Electoral Court (TSE) judge assigned for the case.

Lula was convicted of corruption and money laundering, thus ineligible according to the Clean Record Act (Lei da Ficha Limpa). His defense team is trying to revert his conviction in Brazil's Supreme Court.

His candidacy filing can be challenged within five days of publication of the full ticket. On Wednesday (15), Brazil's chief prosecutor Raquel Dodge was already questioning the candidacy.

TSE judge Admar Gonzaga will review all challenges.

From Curitiba, where Lula is currently serving his sentence, he said that the only reason he will not be PT's candidate for president is "if the Electoral Court wrenches [him] out of the ticket".

The party can file a replacement candidate until September 17th.

PT defined Electoral Justice as the first battlefield and was planning to file a petition this Wednesday (15) to allow Lula to be take part of RedeTV!'s presidential debate this next Friday (17).
