SÃO PAULO - For former president Fernando Henrique Cardoso (PSDB), who was in office from 1995 to 2002, candidate Jair Bolsonaro (PSL) forestalled the traditional dispute between parties PT e PSDB in the upcoming general elections.
During an interview with Folha, Cardoso said he thinks the elections will result in second rounds with only one of two parties.
According to him, this "Bolsonaro wave" is happening because people are afraid of the future, of corruption and the widespread violence.
Cardoso says he doesn't scorn what Bolsonaro stands for, but he neither wants nor believes that the candidate will win. The former president says that "showing the positive" is the most effective strategy against Bolsonaro.
"It's [the best strategy] attacking. Voters don't like attacks, especially personal ones. Attacking Bolsonaro is like scoring an own goal. It benefits him."
About the Worker's Party (PT), former president Lula's party (who is serving a corruption and money laundering sentence in jail), Cardoso says that PT made the state become peremptory and hegemonic. "I don't like it," he said.
