On Sunday, the rebellion in Complexo Anísio Jobim happened when families were visiting, who had arrived to impede a confrontation with police.

According to the Amazonas secretary of public security, Louismar Bonates, conflicts between criminal factions prompted the rebellion. In 2017, a series of attacks on prisons left 126 prisoners dead in Amazonas, Roraima and Rio Grande do Norte.

The Minister of Justice said that he would send, at the request of the governor Wilson Lima (PSC), penitential reinforcements to Manaus, that would include criminal law federal agents.

The national force has managed security outside of the Manaus prison since 2017.
