After a Rio de Janeiro Federal Court denied his request for habeas corpus Tuesday, ex-president Michel Temer turned himself in to the São Paulo Federal Police Wednesday.
Lawyers of the ex-president petitioned the STJ (Superior Tribunal of Justice) for Temer to be released. The court will judge the request next Tuesday at 2 pm.
Temer turned himself in two hours before the deadline imposed by Rio de Janeiro federal judge Carolina Figueiredo. The ex-president left his house in a black car, accompanied any four other trailing vehicles. He did not speak with the media.
The Rio de Janeiro federal court decided that Temer will be detained in São Paulo at the Federal Police Superintendent in the city’s west zone. Judge Figueiredo consulted the court about the possibility of Temer being jailed in São Paulo, close to his family.
The ex-president was arrested in March after judge Marcelo Bretas complied with a request of the Lava Jato task force in Rio de Janeiro. According to the prosecutor, Temer is suspected of leading a criminal organization that, for 40 years, received numerous advantages in contracts involving state and public enterprises.
