Lead Prosecutor Recommends Semi-Open Prison Regime for Lula

Ex-President has been in prison in Curitiba since April of 2018 for the triplex case

Brasília

In a letter sent to the Superior Court of Justice, Brazil’s Attorney General’s office recommends that ex-president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) transition into a semi-open prison regime in which he can leave during the day to work and study, but must return at night.

Assistant attorney general Area Lustosa Pierre signed the letter last week.

Lula entered prison in April of 2018, after being condemned on an appeal to 12 years and one month in prison for corruption and money laundering in the Guarujá (SP) triplex case.

On April 23 of this year, the penalty was reduced to eight years, 10 months and 20 days by the four ministers of the Fifth Panel of the STJ, opening the way for the PT to request regime progression.
