Supreme Court Justice Reverses Decision on Authorized Caribbean Trip for Condemned Senator

Alexandre de Moraes revoked the approval given to Acir Gurgacz, who is serving a sentence under house arrest

Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes revoked on Wednesday Senator Acir Gurgacz's (PDT-RO) travel permit to the Caribbean. Gurgacz is under house arrest for misappropriation of funds.

The parliamentarian—who had been convicted by the Supreme Court to four and a half years' imprisonment for misappropriation of funds obtained from an official financial institution—had been authorized to vacation in Aruba by the Federal District Court of Penalties for Executions.

In addition to banning the senator's travel permit, the Supreme Justice has ordered that the congressman surrender his passport within 24 hours.

In approving the trip, judge Fernando Luiz de Lacerda Messere had allowed Gurgacz—who gives a dossier in Congress—to carry out the trip between July 17 and August 3.

Acir Gurgacz ran for the government of Rondônia in the elections of 2018 but was blocked by the Law of the Clean Tab because of his Supreme Court condemnation.

The parliamentarian began serving his sentence in the semi-open regime but later progressed to the house arrest.

Before Moraes' decision, Gurgacz's press office said that the trip to Aruba would take place during a parliamentary recess. The senator also claimed that the trip would be to commemorate his 35 years of marriage.
