Car Wash Prosecutors Request that Lula Serve Remaining Sentence under Semi-Open Conditions

If approved, former President will likely serve sentence at home because most prisons don't have capacity for semi-open conditions

São Paulo

The Federal Public Prosecution Service, MPF, asked the court to allow former President Lula to serve out his sentence in a semi-open conditions. In this system, a prisoner is allowed to leave prison during the day but must return each night.

But if the request is approved, there is a great possibility is that Lula will serve his sentence at home. Most penal establishments are unable to house prisoners in this system.

According to the Car Wash Operation (Lava Jato) prosecutors, "the execution of the custodial sentence presupposes its progressive execution." Lula has already fulfilled a sixth of his sentence so he can complete the rest in the semi-open regime.

Attorneys Deltan Dallagnol, Roberto Pozzobon and Laura Tessler signed the request.

They claim that Lula has good jail behavior and is therefore entitled to system progression.
