Federal Police Requests New Investigation into Campaign Finances of Minister of Tourism

Evidence was sent to the Public ministry, who will decide if the investigation will proceed

Brasília and Belo Horizonte

The Federal Police wants to open a second investigation into PSL's phantom political candidates. This time, however, it wants to focus on an illegal slush fund connected to the political campaign of the current Minister of Tourism, Marcelo Álvaro Antônio.

He was elected federal deputy in Minas Gerais in 2018. The first investigation started at the beginning of the years.

Folha revealed on Sunday (6) that a statement and a spreadsheet seized in the case investigation raise suspicions that money from the PSL phantom candidate scheme was diverted to illegally fuel the campaigns of President Jair Bolsonaro and Alvaro Antonio.

The new investigation, if it goes forward, will not focus on Bolsonaro, but the minister of the current government.

The prosecutor will decide if the investigation will be opened. Prosecutor Fernando Ferreira Abreu has already confirmed that there will be further investigations, without details.

The minister, already indicted, denies any wrongdoing. The president said on Sunday (6) that Folha "went too far" and "descended into the depths of the sewage" when it published a report about the possible use of cash in his campaign for the Presidency and the tourism minister.
