Lava Jato prosecutors hid information from Federal Supreme Court Justice Rosa Weber in order to gain her support in continuing the investigations involving former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) in early 2016.

According to messages shared by the website Intercept and analyzed in conjunction with Folha, a task force learned that Lula—through phones tapped by the PF—was mobilizing to try to influence Rosa. The task force did not inform Justice Weber about this.

Fearful of leaks, prosecutors did not pass the contents on to the attorney general's office, Rodrigo Janot, who they did not trust.

Rosa supported the continuation of the investigation, and days later, there was a coercive search and driving operation against Lula.

When sought, the task force said data protection is needed "to serve the public interest." Janot and Rosa's office said they would not comment on the case.
