Bolsonaro's Chief of Staff Shifts Focus to Electoral Ambitions

As Bolsonaro weakens his power, Onyx Lorenzoni zeroes in on his candidacy to RS government

Brasília

Onyx Lorenzoni (DEM-RS), Bolsonaro's chief of staff, has seen his power diminished in Jair Bolsonaro's government, so he has begun focusing on a 2022 governor election campaign in his Rio Grande Sul home state.

A survey carried out by Folha identified an average of three meetings per week between the Rio Grande do Sul minister and representatives of Rio Grande do Sul - at least 155 of a total of 650. In private conversations, he does not hide his intention to run for the state government in 2022.

Onyx saw his responsibilities weakened even more, yesterday after Bolsonaro transferred the Investment Partnership Program (PPI) to the Ministry of Economy. The situation worsened after his executive secretary, Vicente Santini, was fired for using the FAB plane for an exclusive flight. Santini was even appointed to another role, but the president stepped back and confirmed the aide's departure.
