PT Political Party Turns 40 at Moment it Seeks Political Renewal

Party puts priority on winning back voters it lost to the right

The PT political party turned 40 years old on Monday (10) after experiencing its most challenging period. In recent years, the party has been rocked by the Car Wash operation, recession, impeachment of a president and the arrest of its greatest leader.

One of the most urgent tasks, according to party leaders, is to reconnect with sectors that have the right has captured, whether liberal or conservative.

"The PT's main challenge is to reconnect with portions of the working class and youth that migrated to another political project in 2018," said  PT federal deputy Natália Bonavides, 31.

"The renewal issue is dramatic for us. The PT is an old party," said Gilberto Carvalho, 69, former chief of staff to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the Presidency and one of the party's historical figures.

What remains unchanged in the party is deference to Lula, and the permanent defense of his presidential candidacy.

After a long period of political siege, due to the Car Wash Operation and the scandals that reached the figure of its greatest leader, the party seems to have regained some self-confidence.

Car Wash, the release of the ex-president and the political mistakes of the Jair Bolsonaro government, have encouraged PT members to shout "Lula 2022", despite all the lawsuits he faces.
