810 State Schools in SP Have Not Opened Due to Lack of Authorization and 67 Are under Construction

Onsite classes resumed on Monday (8), but 15.2% of schools remained closed

São Paulo

Of the 5,300 state schools in São Paulo, 810 were unable to reopen on Monday (8). Monday was the first day of face-to-face classes after almost 11 months of closure due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

According to the State Department of Education, 800 schools did not open because they were in municipalities that did not authorize the return of classroom activities.

Another 7 did not open because they had suspected or confirmed cases of coronavirus among teachers and staff even before classes started. In 3 units the classes did not resume because they had unfinished construction, to correct structural problems. They represent 15.2% of all schools in the state network.

Of the 645 municipalities in São Paulo state, 129 did not authorize the return of face-to-face classes. The mayors have decided that the schools of the municipal and state networks can only reopen from March 1st. Private schools, however, are allowed to open from February 18.
