Brazil's Congressional Leader Reaches Agreement with Opposition and Places PT and PSDB Political Parties on Congressional Board of Directors

Brasília

Less than 24 hours after demoting the PT and removing other opponents from Congress' board of directors, the new president of the House, deputy Arthur Lira (PP-AL), relented and gave the opposition seats to avoid blocking the agenda.

The Board of Directors forms the top of Congress and, together with the President, is responsible for all administrative decisions, and some policies, in the House.

The decision, anticipated by Folha, was made after a meeting of party leaders held in the late afternoon of Tuesday (2). The delay in reaching a solution that appeals to all sides meant that the election for the positions, which would take place this Tuesday, was postponed until this Wednesday (3), at 10 am.

The closed agreement maintains the PL in the 1st vice-presidency of Congress, with deputy Marcelo Ramos (AM). The 2nd vice-presidency continues with the PSD, occupied by deputy André de Paula (PE).
