Supreme Court Justice Orders Senate President to Install Commission to Investigate Government's Handling of the Covid-19 Pandemic

Supreme Court answered senators' request and affirmed that the Legislative House would open the commission to investigate the pandemic management in Brazil

Brasília

Supreme Court Justice ordered Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco (DEM-MG) to install a CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) of the Covid-19 pandemic government response.

The justice affirmed that the necessary requirements for opening the commission are present and that the head of the Senate cannot be omitted in this regard.

Barroso submitted the decision to the court for analysis. The case will be heard in the next virtual session of the Supreme Court, which begins on April 16 and runs until 26 of the same month. During this period, the justices must include their votes in the system.

The decision is a defeat for President Jair Bolsonaro's ( no party) allied base in Congress, which had been trying to bar the commission from investigating his management of the pandemic.

The magistrate stated that the context justifies the urgency necessary to act individually in the process.
