Supreme Court Justice Aids Eleitoral Lawsuits that Could Harm Bolsonaro

Justice releases use of evidence from investigation of false news and undemocratic acts in lawsuits against president

Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes authorized the sharing of evidence from the investigation of false news and anti-democratic acts with lawsuits by the Superior Electoral Court that could potentially lead to the impeachment of Jair Bolsonaro and vice-president Hamilton Mourão.

Thus, the investigation into the alleged participation of the president in a network that triggered false news in the 2018 election will be expanded.

A request to use documents in the electoral cases had been pending for more than a year. At the TSE (Superior Electoral Court), the assessment is that Moraes was in no hurry precisely to have a weapon against a possible offensive by the Executive against the institutions.

The decision takes place amid tension between the powers because Bolsonaro has verbally attacked the Supreme Court and threatened not to carry out the 2022 national elections.

He adopted a more moderate tone after meeting the head of the STF (Supreme Court), Luiz Fux. For interlocutors, the change is due, in part, to the need to improve the relationship with the Senate.
