Rio de Janeiro

The Brazilian population reached the mark of 213.3 million inhabitants in 2021, according to an estimate by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) released this Friday (27). The study is dated July 1st as a reference.

In 2020, the projection was 211.8 million people – around 1.5 million fewer.

The data, however, still do not measure the consequences of the Covid pandemic, which has already caused more than 570 thousand deaths in the country.

The city of São Paulo remains the most populous in the country, with 12.4 million inhabitants. It is followed by Rio de Janeiro (6.8 million), Brasília (3.1 million) and Salvador (2.9 million).

The 17 municipalities in the country with more than 1 million inhabitants concentrate 21.9% of the Brazilian population. That is, 46.7 million people.
