After nearly six months of investigation, with more than 600,000 deaths by Covid in Brazil and a contested conduct of the federal government in the pandemic, the Senate Covid Inquiry that investigated the actions and omissions of the Jair Bolsonaro administration in the face of the disease reached the final stretch with the proposal to punish the President of the Republic for nine crimes.
The final report presented this Wednesday (20) by senator Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL), Covid CPI rapporteur, suggests that Bolsonaro be indicted on charges, among others, of malfeasance, charlatanism, crimes against humanity and responsibility.
The vote on the document in the committee — composed of 11 incumbents, 7 of whom formed a group that worked together to reach the final text — should take place on the 26th. Installed by the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (DEM-MG), after the determination of the Supreme Court Justice Luís Roberto Barroso, who responded to the request of a group of senators, the CPI does not, by itself, have the power to impose legal liability. But his work will be taken to the Attorney General's Office, which is responsible for evaluating possible measures against Bolsonaro.
