46% of Police Operations in RJ Were Not Reported to the Public Ministry

Underreporting identified from June to November 2020 and violates Supreme Court decision

Rio de Janeiro

Almost half of the police operations carried out in Rio de Janeiro from June to November of last year were not reported to the Public Ministry and, therefore, failed to comply with the Supreme Court order that restricted actions during the pandemic to exceptional cases.

The finding comes from a study by the Grupo de Estudos de Novos Ilegalismos at the Fluminense Federal University with the Fogo Cruzado data laboratory.

According to the STF, the police must report their incursions to the Public Ministry, the body that controls them.

But, of 494 operations carried out in the analyzed period, according to press records collected by the researchers, 46% were not reported to the MP. In the pandemic, two operations had a high death tolls - one of them in São Gonçalo, this week

The Military Police did not comment on the data by this publication. The Civil Police said they fully complied with the Supreme Court's decision.
