Former Education Minister Fires Gun at Brasilia Airport

Milton Ribeiro said that fear of exposing a weapon publicly led to accidental firing during check-in; no one was hurt and he was taken to the police to testify

Former Education Minister Milton Ribeiro fired a gun this Monday (25) while checking in at an airline's desk at Brasília airport. He said the shooting was accidental. No one was injured, but Milton Ribeiro was referred to the Federal Police to clarify the circumstances of the episode. In his testimony, Ribeiro linked the accidental firing of his revolver to an attempt to remove his ammunition without publicly exposing the weapon.

To the PF, Ribeiro stated that he opened his document folder to take his gun and separate it from the magazine. "The deponent, afraid of publicly exposing his firearm on the counter, tried to dismantle it inside the briefcase, when the accidental shooting occurred", says an excerpt from the testimony. According to the former minister, the space inside the briefcase was "small to handle the weapon". The shot, he said, pierced the holster where the gun was, the briefcase and scattered on the floor at the airport.
