Moro Becomes Defendant for Damages to The Economy

Lula says he expects ex-judge 'right of defense'

Former judge Sergio Moro became a defendant in a lawsuit in which PT federal deputies ask that he be sentenced to reimburse the public coffers for alleged damages caused to Petrobras and the Brazilian economy for his actions as head of Operation Car Wash.

The lawsuit was filed on the 27th and sent to the 2nd Federal Civil Court of Brasília. The PT members did not stipulate the amount of compensation to be paid in case of conviction.

In the lawsuit, the parliamentarians claim that the former judge "manipulated the largest Brazilian company, Petrobras, as a mere useful instrument to cover up his personal interests."

Former President Lula said he hoped that Moro would have the right of defense that he did not have when he was tried by the former judge and sentenced to prison.

Moro said that the lawsuit is "laughable" and that the court decision does not involve value judgment. "As soon as quoted, I will defend myself."
