Public Security Secretary of Amazonas Says that Disappearances Lack Strong Evidence of Crime

Investigation avoids establishing link between arrested man and disappearance of journalist and indigenist

The Secretary of Public Security of Amazonas, General Carlos Alberto Mansur, said this Wednesday (8) that there is "no strong evidence of crimes" in the case of the disappearance of indigenist Bruno Pereira and British journalist Dom Phillips.

However, the regional superintendent of the Federal Police, Eduardo Fontes, said that no hypothesis has been ruled out, including that both were victims of homicide.

The statements took place in an interview with journalists from representatives of agencies involved in the search for Pereira and Phillips. They disappeared in the Vale do Javari region (AM) Sunday.

"We still don't have strong evidence of a crime, but we are investigating," Mansur said.

The Federal Police superintendent, in turn, said: "We opened a police investigation into criminal organizations that operate in this region, dedicated to drug trafficking and cross-border crimes. We do not rule out any investigative line."

The Federal Police, the Armed Forces, and the police authorities in the state participated in the interview.
