Datafolha: Majority Views Bolsonaro's Threats as Serious, but Do Not Believe in a Coup

For 56%, institutions have to worry about the president; 37% believe he can actually do something

Jair Bolsonaro's (PL) coup-oriented campaign against the electoral system and the judiciary has been viewed with concern by most Brazilians, who believe that the threats must be taken seriously by the institutions. At the same time, the same contingent does not see the president staging a coup.

This is what the most recent Datafolha survey reveals, carried out last Wednesday (27th) and Thursday (28th), with a margin of error of two percentual points, for more or for less.

For 56% of respondents, Bolsonaro speaks seriously when he attacks the security of electronic ballot boxes and ministers of the TSE (Superior Electoral Court), for example. However, 36% think that his statements will not bring consequences, and 8% did not know how to evaluate them.

These are similar indicators to those recorded in May, the last time this question was asked by the institute. As might be expected, concern grows among the 47% who say they will vote for Bolsonaro's main rival in the October presidential election, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

Among them, 61% see the president's talk as something serious, while 33% do not. Among the 28% who declared a vote for the president, no less than 50% consider the threats to be something that deserves attention, while 40% dismiss them altogether.
