Elisabeth Tenreiro, Killed by a Student in São Paulo, Became a Teacher at 60

Former employee of the Adolfo Lutz Institute, she was a defender of science and leaves behind daughters and grandchildren

São Paulo

Science teacher Elisabeth Tenreiro, 71, killed this Monday (27) in an attack at the state school Thomazia Montoro, in Vila Sônia, west of São Paulo, was crazy about her daughters and grandchildren. She was also an advocate for science and has spent the last few months emphasizing the importance of the Covid-19 vaccination on her Facebook page.

On the social network, she used to exchange messages of affection with family, friends, and former students. For current students, she left reminders such as posts about the items needed they needed to take with them when taking the Enem (National High School Exam) tests. She also posted fun things about chemistry and biology. Tenreiro worked for decades at the IAL (Instituto Adolfo Lutz), which produces studies and inputs in the area of health and is linked to the State Health Department. She joined the institute in the 1970s and retired as a technical health agent.

For a few years, Tenreiro combined work at the institute with classes in state schools —the teacher was approved in 2012, at the age of 60, to teach elementary and high school classes— and she really enjoyed teaching.

Tenreiro started teaching at the Thomazia Montoro school this year. Until December of last year, she was a teacher at the state school Emiliano Augusto Cavalcanti de Albuquerque e Melo, in Alto de Pinheiros, also in the west zone of São Paulo.
