Days after meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping during a Brics meeting, President Jair Bolsonaro will welcome Huawei Chief Executive Wei Yao on Monday.
The meeting, according to presidential advisers, was requested by the Chinese company, which is eyeing the Brazilian market amid a trade war between the Asian country and the United States over technology.
Matters such as 5G technology are expected to be on the agenda. The issue is being disputed between the US and China, and the Brazilian government tries to remain neutral in the war between the two giants.
In Beijing, on an official visit in October, he said Brazil will wait for the best bid at the 5G technology auction and will not position itself on the dispute.
The 5G auction in Brazil will take place in the second half of next year. The US is pushing Brazil to bar the Chinese supply giant, saying it poses a threat to national security.
The Chinese offer the cheapest package compared to competitors (Ericsson and Nokia) and may retaliate in important areas if they are excluded from the supply. So far, only Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Vietnam have surrendered to American pressure.
