The Brazilian labor market, impacted by the coronavirus crisis, lost 1.1 million employees with a formal work contract between March and April this year.

Covid-19's effect on employment began in March but intensified in April. In the first two months of the year, the Brazilian economy had been creating more jobs than in 2019.

In January and February, before the public health crisis, the country created 338,000 jobs - almost 50% more than registered in the first two months of 2019.

A negative balance started to accumulate under the restrictive measures and closing of trade and companies in March and April.

Ministry of Economy presented the data from the General Register of Employed and Unemployed were presented on Wednesday (27).

April registered the most significant impact of Covid-19 when the balance of the formal job market was the closing of 860.5 thousand vacancies.

The April balance is the worst for all months in the ministry's historical series, which began in 1992.
