Mourão Says That, in A Post-Pandemic Scenario, Governments Will Not Have The Resources to Invest in The Amazon

At the Davos forum, vice president states that private initiative must lead investments in the region

Brasília

Vice President Hamilton Mourão (PRTB) said on Wednesday (27) at the virtual version of the World Economic Forum in Davos that the private sector must lead investments in the Amazon because the government will not have the resources to do so in a post-pandemic scenario .

"It is crucial for the private sector to take the lead in financing research and scientific programs for the region. Governments, especially in the post-pandemic economy scenario, will not have surpluses available to direct large amounts to these types of activities," said the deputy -president in an English speech on the panel "Financing the Transition from the Amazon to a Sustainable Bioeconomy."

In the video meeting, which also included the participation of the President of Colombia, Iván Duque, Mourão said that the sustainable future of the Amazon depends on the expansion of the bioeconomy, which also depends on the private sector. The Brazilian, however, acknowledged that today there is no attractive scenario for investors.

"The sustainable future of the Amazon depends on the expansion of the bioeconomy. This will become a reality only with the participation of the private sector. We know that the current investment conditions in the region are not ideal due to the lack of infrastructure. Our government is committed to promoting an attractive business environment and boosting sectors of the economy," Mourão said.
