Bolsonaro Promises His Supporters Changes to Income Tax Brackets

President blames Brazil's debt for failing to carry out campaign promise

President Jair Bolsonaro promised again on Wednesday (3) to make changes to the income tax brackets.

A Bolsonaro sympathizer asked the president about the topic when he arrived at the entrance of the Palácio da Alvorada.

First, he said he could not update the taxes last year because of the government's emergency spending on the Covid-19 crisis.

When a supporter asked about 2021, Bolsonaro replied: "The economy seems to be coming back. Yes, I can shake it up. It hasn't gone anywhere I wanted [it] to go. Last year was a big blow. It was R$700 billion in debt," he said.

Today, the income tax exemption limit is R$1,903.98. During his campaign for President, Bolsonaro had promised to raise the amount to R$5,000. But he has said in recently that he cannot keep his promise because "Brazil is broken."
