Backed by Bolsonaro, The Sale of Ammunition for Collectors and Sports Shooters Doubles

Collectors, sports shooters and hunters acquired more than 61 million units in 2021

Brasília

Ammunition sales for collectors, marksmen and hunters (CACs) doubled in 2021, reaching 61.3 million units against 28.5 million in 2020.

The measures adopted by the government of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) increased the population's access to weapons and ammunition and, on the other hand, weakened the mechanisms of control and inspection of weapons and ammunition. One measure revoked three norms that improved the tracking of weapons and ammunition in the country.

In 2021, the sale of ammunition for CACs for the first time surpassed the sale for institutional use, which reached 54.7 million. The growth of this category, which involves the police forces and the Armed Forces, was 5% from 2020 to 2021.

Unpublished data from the Brazilian Army were obtained via the Access to Information Law by Instituto Sou da Paz.

There was also an increase in the number of records and the weapons arsenal in the hands of this category. In total, there are 795,000 registered weapons of CACs and 492,000 people with active CAC registration.
