Deaths from Covid also Hit The Economy

Loss for the country in human capital is US$ 3.2 billion per year

On Friday (10), Brazil reached the mark of 668,007 lives lost to Covid and 31,416,072 people infected, according to a survey by the consortium of press outlets. New records have improved in recent weeks, but new cases have increased.

The substantial loss of life, in addition to grieving families, translates into less income. From March 2020 to March 2022, Brazil lost R$16.5 billion (US$ 3.2 billion) per year in human capital. This number considers the monthly income of children up to 69 years and the income of the elderly to the age of 70.

The calculation was made by FGV IBRE researchers Claudio Considera, and Juliana Trece calculated the loss, which estimates how much these people would spend in life.

If it weren't for a pandemic, these workers who had their lives shortened would bring in a total income of R$ 285.9 billion throughout their careers.
