Pandemic Aftermath Makes Brazil's GDP Grow 1% in The First Quarter

Result is below projections; economy will lose steam throughout the year, say analysts

Amid a scenario of relaxed restrictions and reopening of the economy, the Brazilian Gross Domestic Product grew 1% in the first quarter of 2022, compared to the three immediately previous months, according to data released this Thursday (2) by the Instituto Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics.

The rise was driven by the return of services, the main sector from the perspective of supply in GDP. The segment, which had been shaken by restrictive measures to contain Covid-19, also rose 1% compared to the end of 2021.

Despite being positive, the GDP performance in the first quarter was slightly below financial market expectations. In the median, analysts consulted by the Bloomberg agency projected an increase of 1.2%.
