  • Lula's Bolsonarization

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva had a bad week, perhaps the worst so far in this third term. He postponed the launch of the new fiscal rule and had verbal clashes with old opponents, he also watched ministers get into conflict and provisional measures get stuck in the middle of a power struggle in Congress. He got sick. He did other things too, he launched programs, but much of it was overshadowed by his own "chatter" or "wordiness", as described by this newspaper and its main competitor.

  • Folha's Passive Voice

The image of the week was that of Russian fighter jets pouring gasoline on the American drone. Kind of a Top Gun scene, but if it were in the movie it would sound pretty lame. The most interesting thing about the episode is that the USA first denounced the incident and the unprofessional attitude of the rival force. They heard back that the drone was making erratic maneuvers and that the rest was a lie. They waited until the next day to show the video and tell the world who was lying. War is also about narratives, as they say, and one of them was undeniable on the covers of newspapers and websites across the planet.

  • When Folha Scares

From the "Splurge PEC" at the end of last year to the "neglected measure" to tax oil exports earlier this month, Folha readers have become accustomed to a newspaper full of adjectives against the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva government. Or not.

  • Big Tech, Big Problem

In the midst of the pandemic, in 2021, US "surgeon general" Vivek Murthy, who vocalizes the country's public health issues at the federal level, warned that misinformation was causing unnecessary illness and death and called for transparency and accountability for the so-called Big techs. Days later, according to an article in The New York Times, Nick Clegg, then Facebook's vice president of global affairs, responded to the member of the Joe Biden government in a private message: "It's not very nice to be accused of killing people."

  • The Era of Artificial Journalism

"'Ultra-intelligent' robot that uses AI answers questions and writes texts by itself." This is how, between dazzled and simple, Folha reported its first impressions about ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence tool that revolutionizes, threatens, or opens a new dimension in the relationship between the human species and machines. The phrase seems to be taken from a science fiction episode from the 1970s. It would be interesting to know if the robot, a chatbot for those more familiar with it, would know how to write in a dated fiction style, taking into account, for example, a sense of imagination fueled by 1960's TV series. Everything around here always arrived late.

  • The Market's Playpen

"What is behind the conflict between Lula and the Brazilian Central Bank and what are the impacts on the economy." The headline, published by O Estado de S. Paulo on Tuesday (7), promises an answer but does not deliver it. The report listens to agents from the so-called market, who forecast catastrophes and classify Lula's speech as naive. What is behind the conflict, however, remains there, quiet, hidden, because the market, no less naive, does not know what is going on either.

  • The Rare Glory of Being Ageless

The reporter at the next desk was already bigger than the position. It happens a lot in newsrooms, where career plans are at most a simple agenda, never a reality. The newbie's perception was serenely confirmed in the following years, during live coverage and special reports. The guy would later become a writer, but on that day, he naturally apologized to the interviewee, with whom he spoke on the phone when asking his age. "It's a Folha thing", he explained to the character in his story, but also to the newbie that watched the scene with curiosity.

  • The Country Oblivious to the Yanomami

Visiting Inhotim is mandatory for several reasons. One of them is the pavilion dedicated to Claudia Andujar, "who photographed the Yanomami in the Amazon during a lifetime of activism", wrote The New York Times last weekend. The article spoke of an exhibition that will open next Friday (3rd) in New York, with 200 images by the photographer and 80 drawings and paintings by Yanomami artists conceived "to give visibility to the effort to protect their land, people and culture".

  • Folha's Augmented Reality

"Photojournalism is an art," Folha's photographer Gabriela Biló declared to the newspaper O Globo last week. The controversy surrounding her work, an image of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva filtered through the shattered glass at the Presidential Palace, published on the First Page on Thursday (19), was so great that it deserved the competitor's attention. In fact, it had been causing turmoil since Wednesday night (18), when it appeared on the newspaper's website and quickly made its way onto social media platforms.

  • A Difficult Year for Folha

January. "I didn't receive today's issue 01/01/2022 nor the one for Christmas Day." "It's impossible for us to go up on the roof to get the newspaper." "What is your problem with the expression 'righteous person'?" "Faced with the frightening article by Mr. Antonio Risério, I would like to ask you an objective question: is Folha racist?" "I cannot be supportive of journalism that has more moderation in the comment section than in the selection of articles." "Shame on you, Folha." "As a subscriber, I express my full support for the journalists' petition."
