Number of Confirmed Coronavirus Cases in Brazil Rises to 234

There is a growing number of states with local transmission; RJ and SP have sustained transmission

Brasília

The number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus rose from 200 to 234, according to the Ministry of Health on Monday (16).

The data show that there is community or sustained transmission in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. This means there are cases of people who have not traveled and have no connection with a confirmed case.

In the states of Bahia, Mato Grosso do Sul, Santa Catarina, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro there is local transmission, which is one level down — when someone acquires the virus without having traveled abroad, but with contact with someone confirmed. That is, it is possible to link the case.

The balance sheet represents an increase in the total of states with this form of transmission - until Sunday, there were only three (SP, RJ and BA).

There are also cases in all regions of the country. In all, 15 states and the Federal District have records.

The largest amount is in São Paulo, where there are 152 confirmed cases. Until Sunday, there were 136.

According to the Ministry of Health, the number of patients with the novel coronavirus in the country may be higher, since more states still need to update records in the system.
