Brazil registered 7,938 new cases of the Covid-19 disease on Sunday, reaching 241,080 people with a confirmed diagnosis and passing the total number of confirmed cases in France and Spain. There were also 485 new deaths by Covid-19, with a total of 16,118 lives lost.
On Saturday, Brazil registered 14,919 new infections and 816 new deaths, bringing the official total to 233,142 confirmed cases and 15,633 deaths since the country's pandemic began in February. Sundays and Mondays are usually marked by a smaller number of cases, as the records are slower on the weekend.
The country has failed to maintain high rates of social isolation that, at the beginning of the pandemic, helped to prevent an explosion of cases, according to experts. This Sunday, President Jair Bolsonaro (without a party) returned to participate in an agglomerated act in BrasÃlia. Bolsonaro's support for such demonstrations has been constant, ignoring the risk of contamination of the people present there.
In the same week that it registered in just seven days an increase of more than 50% of the total accumulated deaths, the country also lost the second Minister of Health in a month. Nelson Teich resigned on Friday (15) after being pressured by the president to expand the protocol for the use of chloroquine, a drug with no proven effectiveness in combating Covid-19 and with associated risks.
