Government Prepares Provisional Measure to Pay for 100 Million Doses of Oxford Vaccine

The Ministry of Health is preparing a provisional measure to pay for and make available 100 million doses of the Oxford vaccine against Covid-19 in Brazil. The proposal will cost R$ 1.9 billion (US$ 357 million) . It will be R$ 1.3 billion (US$ 244 million) for payments to AstraZeneca.

Another R$ 522.1 million (US$ 103.000) will be for expenses necessary for the final processing of the vaccine by Bio-Manguinhos / Fiocruz and a further R$ 95.6 million (US$ 18 million) for investments to absorb production technology by Fiocruz.

Fiocruz and AstraZeneca signed on Friday (31) the a preliminary agreement between the laboratories for the transfer of technology and production of 100 million doses of the vaccine against Covid-19, if its effectiveness and security are confirmed.

According to the executive secretary of the portfolio, Elcio Franco, the first people to be immunized in the country will be in the priority group, such as the elderly, health professionals, and teachers.
