'Is 50% Good?', Asks Bolsonaro, Mocking Coronavac's Effectiveness

Vaccine has an overall effectiveness of 50.38% against Covid-19, Butantan announced; president later said he would buy any immunization approved by Anvisa

Brasília

President Jair Bolsonaro (no party) mocked the Coronavac vaccine's effectiveness against Covid-19, this Wednesday (13).

After the controversy over the figures released last week, the institute revealed on Tuesday (12) that the immunizing agent has an overall effectiveness of 50.38%, information anticipated by Folha.

"Is that 50% good?" asked Bolsonaro to a supporter who approached him about the vaccine in the garden of the Palácio da Alvorada.

"This is what I understand. Now we see the truth. I have been getting beaten because of the vaccine for four months. Between me and the vaccine is Anvisa. I am not irresponsible. I am not in the mood to please anyone," Bolsonaro said in the exchange recorded and published by a Bolsonaro supporter channel on the internet.

The efficacy rate was reported to Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) in the application for emergency registration of the vaccine and is above the 50% universally required to consider a viable immunizer.
