Total Deaths in Brazil Grew 14.9% with Covid in 2020

At least 12.9% of them are related to the novel coronavirus

The total number of deaths in Brazil in 2020, the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic, grew by 14.9% compared to 2019. Of the 1.5 million people who lost their lives, at least 12.9% of them were victims of the novel coronavirus, considering the 194,976 deaths from the disease recorded by the consortium of press vehicles, from March to December 31st.

The data are part of the IBGE's 2020 annual Civil Registry Statistics survey, released this Thursday (18th), which comes from information from notary offices, and courts. The increase in the number of deaths in the country had been on the rise in previous years, but not so pronounced. From 2018 to 2019, it was 2.6%, and between 2017 and 2018, the variation was 0.7%.

Last year's rate had the greatest variation since 1984, according to the IBGE text, but the institute claims that there was greater underreporting of deaths in that decade.
