SPECIAL ENVOY TO WASHINGTON D.C.
A group of 12 congressmen from the Democratic Party in the United States published a public letter in defense of former Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in which they accuse Judge Sergio Moro of persecuting him through the issuance of "arbitrary" decisions.
The letter, which the Folha received a copy of, is addressed to the Brazilian Ambassador in Washington, Sergio Amaral.
"We are especially concerned about the persecution of former president Lula da Silva, which violates the norms of international treaties".
In the letter from a group led by Democratic Congressman John Conyers, the legislators declare that "Lula is seen as a serious threat at the polls by his political opponents".
The missive was also signed by a number of American trade unions and think tanks, among them the AFL-CIO trade union which has more than 12 million members.
