Luis Lacalle Pou, from Uruguay, said he was surprised by the PT member's statement in the meeting with the Venezuelan dictator, Nicolás Maduro.

"This meeting [of South American leaders] was anticipated, I don't know if it was planned, by a bilateral meeting between Brazil and Venezuela", said the center-right politician during the summit organized by Lula in Brasilia. "I was surprised when it was said that what happens in Venezuela is a narrative. You already know what we think about the government of Venezuela."

In the same vein, Chile's leader, left-wing Gabriel Boric, a critic of the Venezuelan dictatorship, said he expressed a discrepancy with Lula's statement.

"It's not a narrative construct, it's a reality," Boric said. "It is a serious [reality], and I had the opportunity to see it in the eyes and in the pain of hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans who come to our homeland and who also demand a firm and clear position so that human rights are respected always and everywhere".
